The Cold Molecules Network convened in Durham on April 1, 2004, to discuss scientific activities, progress reports, and future strategies. Key topics included the evaluation of the first year’s achievements, budget discussions led by Olivier, and the critical need for post-doc recruitment. The meeting addressed upcoming conferences and emphasized the importance of stimulating young researchers' enthusiasm. Participants highlighted scientific milestones, including the production of ultracold molecular ions and the need for improved collaboration and exchange among network members. Plans for the mid-term review in February 2005 were also outlined.

« COLD MOLECULES NETWORK Business meeting Durham, April 1st 2004
SCHEDULE • Scientific Activity (Françoise) • Comments on previous report : success and problems • Preparing next report = mid-term review • Making choices • Budget : report by Olivier • Importance of post-doc recruitment • Future conferences : project by Olivier and E. Tiemann • DISCUSSION
Comments on the first year report • Scientific highlights : some very good scientific results, such as molecular BEC. • Excellent visibility of the network. • Good prospects for future. • Publications : only the publications which explicitly mention the network contract should be on the list : please make sure that you quote correctly. • Common publications : correct number, Could be improved, since they correspond to collaborations that already existed before the network started. • Visits more visits and scientific exchanges should happen in future.
Comments on the first year report (continued) • Comparison with the program of work. • Research objectives : we add « production of ultracold molecular ions by sympathetic cooling with trapped cold ions » • Work plan: Milestones : • M4 demonstration of collective and coherent effects in an ultracold molecular gas achieved in advance • But achievement of trapped, dense samples of ultracold molecules formed by photoassociation not reached the first year
Comments on the first year report (continued) Conferences • Important goal in my policy • Develop stimulating contacts to encourage enthusiasm from the young researchers in our field • Next conferences • Mid-term review : february 2005 • Final conference : spring or summer 2006 • See the project by Olivier Dulieu and Eberhard Tiemann
Comments on the first year report (continued) Training • Publication of the positions in Physics World and in Europhysics News (very expensive) • Yet the recruitment has been very slow. • We have to increase the number of young researchers • See the table in Olivier's report
Preparation of the mid-term review • The new report should be written for October 2004 . • We have to demonstrate that we are working according to the contract in order to get the second part of the money ; • The review will take place in February 2005 ; • The young researchers will be interviewed to check that their training is correct, and that their research activity does corresponds to our work plan . • We should have recruited enough young researchers : HOW CAN WE IMPROVE THE PRESENT SITUATION?
CHOICES • Have we to update the scientific program? • There is a request by Rudi Grimm to get more post-doc months for his team : we should discuss this point ; • For future workshops, we could save money from the network budget by applying to a series of Marie Curie conferences : see the proposal by O. Dulieu and E. Tiemann; • It would be wise to think of a future network, since Cold Molecules ends in August 2006.
