Where we all began We could make no head way solving our problems [improving writing achievement] until we looked carefully at ourselves, studied what we saw, changed the vision, and realized a new solution--one out of the realm of what we already newwe had to move out of our comfort zone,stretching ourselves to brand-new, out of the ordinary solutions. We did this through self-study, kid watching, and reflection. (Krater, 1994)

    4. Where it will continue to go Learning how to live and teach through diversity, including the inevitable struggles and contradictions, seems especially importantand becoming a literate teacher, in relation to diversity, means doing more than writing and reading about culture-it means learning to be diverse in perspective, skills, and knowledge.

    5. Still going Cultivating the competence and confidence needed to implement culturally responsive teaching should begin in preservice education programs and continue in inservice professional development programs.
