Accomplishments • In 1905 he became president of the American Philosophical Association • Taught at Columbia University from 1905 until he retired in 1929 • Traveled around the world as a philosopher, social and political theorist, and educational reformer
Education • Founder of the Progressive movement and was the dominant figure in American education • First real American influence on American education • Advocated child-centered learning in groups • Child-centered learning is an approach to education focusing on the interests of the students, rather than others involved in the educational system • Student-centered learning requires students to be active, responsible participants in their own learning
“My Pedagogic Creed” • Dewey’s famous declaration concerning education • Dewey focus’s on what education is, what school is, the subject matter of education, the nature of method, and the school and social progress. • In this book he believes that all those who live in society should have the opportunity to an education. Education should be free, regardless of race or wealth. He said that some educators are too focused on test scores and that they should get back to teaching and making sure the students understand the material.
