Montezuma’s Revenge • Spain Sends Conquistadors, Including Hernan Cortes to Conquer New Lands in America • Cortes Targets Moctezuma’s Aztec Empire due to the large amounts of Gold and Silver, and the potential for converting them to Christianity • Cortes Planned to use Superior weapons, and enemies of the Aztecs to conquer the empire • While welcomed at first, Cortez would Seize Tenochtitlan and kill Moctezuma and the other Aztecs

Pizarro WOrld • Francisco Pizarro would lead about 400 men to conquer the Incas near present day Chile • With Better Weapons, and Allies who were enemies of the Incas, Pizarro conquered the Incan Empire • In TWO conquests the Spanish would kill 75% of the Aztec and Incan through Battle and Disease

Hitting the open road • Spain began to settle their New Empire, New Spain, And limited settling to Spanish Christians • Spain created the Viceroyalties of Peru and New Spain to govern the new Lands • New Spain settled Pueblos(trading posts), Missions, and Presidios(military bases) to organize society • The Spanish later created “the Royal Road” to help connect New Spain

  6. DE Explorers of De Day • Ponce de Leon conquered Present Day Puerto Rico and would discover the coast of Florida • Hernando de Soto explored lands including Florida, Georgia, The Carolinas, the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River

A Bad “Vaca” Tion • Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca and Panfilo de Narvaez set out to explore the southwest but encountered Severe weather and Death • After being captured by, and escaping, the Native Americans they would return to Mexico • De Vaca would work for better treatment of the Native Americans, but his works would also inspire other explorers to head to North America • Francisco Vasquez de Coronado would explore New Mexico, Arizona, and the Grand Canyon then work his way through Texas Kansas and Oklahoma

Leaving a Better Life Behind • Peninsulares were rewarded for settling in the New Lands with the Encomienda System which would turn Native Americans into Slaves • Plantations, and Haciendas, would force the Native Americans to Work the Fields, Raise Livestock, and mine for gold • Catholic Missionaries would try to convert the Native Americans to Catholicism, but many would resist • Others, like Bartolome de Las Cases, would urge settlers to treat Native Americans more peacefully but those Laws were Mainly Ignored
