Chapter 4 Lesson 1 p. 134-138: The Voyages of Columbus • How did Columbus’s voyages lead to European settlement of the Americas and an exchange of people, animals, goods, and ways of life between the East and West? • Columbuswas convinced about a cheaper and quicker way to the Indies. On his first voyage, (8/2/1492-10/12/1492) Columbus lands in the Bahama Islands, referring to the Tainoas Indians. Spain wanted to acquire riches as well as establish a colony. The Columbian Exchange influenced life in both the New World, Europe, and Africa. Columbus inspired explorers, like Amerigo Vespucci to travel to the New World.

Chapter 4 Lesson 2 p. 142-145: Different Worlds Collide • How did Spanish conquistadors establish new colonies in North and South America? • Cortes and his allies conquered the Aztecs and their ruler Moctezumacapturing Tenochtitlan in 1519. Pizarro conquers the Incan ruler, Atahualpa and Cuzco by 1532. Spanish soldiers were outnumbered by the Aztecs but had metal armor, muskets, and horses. In 1535, Spain establishes the colony of New Spain with the capital as Mexico City. Lima is the new capital of Peru

Chapter 4 Lesson 3 p. 146-150: Life in New Spain • How did Spain gain great wealth from the settlement and growth of New Spain? • Hernando de Soto, Cabeza de Vaca, Vasquez de Coronado seek gold and riches through North America. These fabled cities do not exist. A new colonial society develops: • Penninsulares (born in Spain) • Creoles (Spanish born in America) • Mestizos (Indian & Spanish Background) • Indians & Africans (no Spanish ancestors) • Encomiendas forced natives to work/convert to Christianity. Bartolome de las Casas (missionary) encouraged Spain to change laws about encomiendas. Enslaved Africans replace native peoples in Hispaniola and New Spain.
