The Golden Guardian 2008 exercise simulates a catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake along a 200-mile section of the San Andreas Fault in Southern California. The scenario anticipates approximately 1,600 ignitions from the quake, with about 1,200 of these fires becoming uncontrollable. It predicts widespread building collapses, displacing tens of thousands, and severe damage to 6,000 highway bridges and 30 dams. Utility disruptions and hazardous material spills will cause economic impacts estimated in the billions, highlighting the urgent need for preparedness and response strategies.
