  2. Eubacteria Introduction Did You Know? Known as “true bacteria” can cause health problems Some are good to eat, such as those in yogurt. have found that some types of Eubacteria can be very useful Eubacteria are unique in the way that they were historically divided into two major groups based on whether or not they retain crystal violet dye during a Gram staining procedure (Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms).

  3. Vocabulary Strain: a group of organisms of the same species having distinctive characteristics but not usually considered a separate breed or variety Gram’s method: a staining technique for the identification of bacteria in which dye is applied to the cell to see if the cell walls of certain bacteria (denoted Gram-positive) retain the first red dye and appear violet, while those that lose it (denoted Gram-negative) appear red Novel: of recent origin or introduction Phylogenetic analysis: study of the evolutionary relationships between genes, populations, species, etc., usually constructing phylogenetic trees (may also be applied to individual characters, in order to chart the evolution of particular traits or conditions) Chlorosome: a photosynthetic light-harvesting complex found in anoxygenic green bacteria Anoxic: an abnormally low amount of oxygen in the body tissues; hypoxia

  4. Choloriumlimicola Prokaryotic; unicellular; cell wall Unique rod shape; lives in extreme climates Autotrophic Contributes fixed carbon Binary fission

  5. Salmonella typhimurium Prokaryotic; unicellular; cell wall Acetylation Chemo-organotrophs Food poisoning; flagellum Binary fission

  6. Nitrospiramoscoviensis Prokaryotic; unicellular; cell wall Periplasmic space Nitrite Nitrogen gas; metals; non-motile Asexual; nitrogen cycle

  7. Bacillus subtilis Prokaryotic; unicellular; cell wall Endospore-forming; aerobic Heterotroph; fermentation Soil and vegetation; flagellum; produces enzymes Binary fission

  8. Kingdom Wrap-up Prokaryotic; unicellular; cell wall They are unicellular, prokaryotic microscopic cells Cell wall is made up of Peptidoglycan Genetic exchange takes place through unidirectional or bidirectional DNA transfer Coupled transcription and translation takes place Can be grouped under two categories: Gram positive bacteria and Gram negative bacteria depending on the nature of the cell wall and the stain which they take up during Gram’s staining.
