  4. Kievan Russia • The area known as Kievan Russia makes up the western part of Russia today, as well as the Ukraine and Belarus countries. • Kiev is still a very popular trading city, and is the capital of the Ukraine today.

  6. Yaroslav the Wise 1019-1054 CE • Vladimir’s son; Prince of Kiev, Russia • Led Kiev to gr8 glory: • Trade alliance marriages • Legal code for property • 1st library in Kiev • Christianity prospered • BUT… • Divided his kingdom among sons = fighting, separation, DECLINE!

  10. Mongols in Russia Genghis Khan- Leader Savage, Killing, burning– took over Asia & ruled for hundreds of years 2 things: Absolute obedience & Tribute ($$) Russian princes = forced Russians to pay $$ to Mongols

  11. Alexander Nevsky 1220-1263 • Prince & Military hero • Novgorod, Russia • Told Russian princes 2 cooperate w. Mongols & pay • Isolated the Russians = little access to new ideas

  12. Ivan III 1440-1505 CE • Prince of Moscow • Russia became a genuine Empire under him: • Openly challenged Mongols • Took the name Czar • Refused to pay • Fought & pushed them away

  16. Why R they imp.? Took over & had Pro-Persian policies = Persian support Preferred Persian culture/language/etc. = Persians  ; use Arabic declines.. When they took over- Persian Empire leadership changed = Caliph still there but just religious leader… not political too…

  18. What happens to them? • Seljuks decline in power • = Decentralized kingdoms • = Mongols take over • = Eventually, Mongols decline & OTTOMAN Turks take over EVERYTHING! • (More about them later)
