Understanding Experimental Characteristics and Vocabulary in Scientific Studies

Explore the key terms and concepts related to experiments, including factors, treatments, experimental units, subjects, control groups, placebos, and blinding techniques. Gain insights into how controlled studies are conducted to examine the effects of explanatory variables. Learn how blinding methods, such as single and double-blind experiments, help ensure unbiased results. Enhance your understanding of experimental procedures and terminology.

  1. Characteristics of an Experiment…. China Allen Peter Manu -____- Michael Sanchez

  2. VOCABULARY EXPERIMENT • A controlled study conducted to find out the effect carrying one or more explanatory variable. FACTOR • Effects on the response variables.

  3. MORE VOCAB! TREATMENT • Any combination of the values of the factors EXPERIMENTAL UNIT • Person, object upon which a treatment is applied.

  4. EVEN MORE VOCAB!! SUBJECT The broader viewpoint; The main focus of the experiment. CONTROL GROUP Baseline treatments used to compare to other treatments.

  5. WAY MORE VOCAB!! PLACEBO • A sugar pill used to compare two experiments to see the difference between both. BLINDING • Nondisclosure of the treatment an experimental unit is receiving.

  6. OKAY NO MORE VOCAB!! SINGLE BLIND • Experiment done that the individual does not know he or she is being experimented. DOUBLE BLIND • Both researcher and experimental unit do not know their being experimented.
