Over 19 million individuals in the U.S. face dietary restrictions due to vegetarianism and food allergies, yet FDA labeling only caters to select allergies. Our innovative Android application aims to assist users in navigating dietary constraints by utilizing high-quality image processing and OCR technology. The app will allow users to scan food items, recognize ingredients, and create customized allergy profiles. Key efforts include improving OCR accuracy, enhancing user interface, and testing with real users to ensure effectiveness and user satisfaction.

THE PROBLEM… • 7 million vegetarians, 12 million food allergy sufferers in US • FDA requires special labeling only on select allergies • Leaves out vegetarians & vegans • Phones now capable of capturing and processing high quality images • Create Android application to assist following dietary constraints

HURDLES • Implementing OCR on Android • Learning curve – Linux setup of Android • Support for various Android phone devices • Image capture and editing (cropping) • Parsing output from OCR
MAJOR WALL & SOLUTION • Accuracy of OCR in “reading” ingredients • Word & Character Dictionaries • Common reading error correction (I and lc L, etc) • Levenshtein Distance (“edit distance”)
STILL TO DO… • Features • Create “allergies” and add ingredients • Share customized allergies with friends • Ingredients helper • Improvements • OCR accuracy, speed, and parsing • Beautify the UI • User testing
