  1. Week of: April 7th – April 11th News to Know Rowdy Readers The student council is started a soring food drive. Please send in any and all nonperishable food items that you would like to donate through April 25th. All donations will go to the OPRF Food Pantry. Our final field trip for the year is planned and set! We are heading to the Oak Park Conservatory for a morning field trip on May 15th. A permission slip will be sent out soon. I understand that there might be some families traveling next weekend. If your child is going to miss a day or two of school and you already know about it, please let me and the office know. The Holmes School Talent Show is coming up next month! An information sheet went home this week. Please look for it in your child’s folder for more information. Please remember that we have library on Thursday’s. Please remind your child that they should bring their library books with them every Thursday in order to get a new one. Also, please remember that we have PE on Tuesdays and Fridays and that your child should wear or bring gym shoes those days. • This week we continued our unit with plants as the main focus. We read a lot of books that helped us figure out an author’s purpose, we wrote expository texts and we worked on the long and short vowel sounds. The books that helped us with some of these skills were: • Seed Secrets • Let’s go to a National Park • The Talking Vegetables • The Apple Pie Tree • Seeds, Seeds, Seeds! • How a Tree Grow • We also added new vocabulary words and new sight words this week. Our sight word list, which is not over 30, includes “here” and “was” now. Our new vocabulary words that were added this week were: moist, necessary, seed, observe and gradually. Remember that the vocabulary words are meant to improve their children’s oral vocabulary skills. Math Madness Upcoming Dates This week we worked A LOT with 3D shapes. The shapes that we concentrated on were: cones, pyramids, cubes, cylinders, rectangular prisms and spheres. Please reinforce these shapes at home and ask about the COUNTLESS activities that we did with these shapes.
