  2. Mondovi High School Graduation Requirements • 24 credits to graduate???…likely 25 • 4 English, 3 Social Studies, 2 Math, 2 Science, 1 ½ Phy. Ed., Health (M.S) and Personal Finance • 4 Graduation Points • 10th Grade WKCE Test • Results back very soon

  3. Preparing for College… • 4 credits English • 3 credits Social Studies • 3 credits Math (Algebra. 1 & higher) • 3 credits Science • 2 credits Foreign Language • Madison, UW-Eau Claire, Minnesota, and numerous private colleges require two units of the same foreign language . . . Madison prefers 3 or more • UW-Platteville and UW-Milwaukee do not require foreign language to be admitted, but require it for graduation. • Be responsible and check all schools you are considering

  4. 4-year College Admissions Criteria continued… • ACT • Grade Point Average (GPA) • Class Rank • Rigor of schedule In Regards to rigor of schedule consider the following: • Quality vs. Quantity • What you have taken vs. What you could have taken.

ACT and Compass Exam • Exams for entrance into college and tech. college • Most students will take at the end of their Junior year • Sophomores can take as well • According to ACT students score higher when: • They enroll in a more rigorous schedule, regardless of achievement level • They enroll in math and science courses beyond Chemistry and Algebra II • Physics is the most useful course for improving ACT • Students enroll in a foreign language

PLAN Exam • 2nd in a series of Pre-ACT test for all 10th graders • Sequel to the Explore exam everyone took last year • Provides an estimated ACT score and college readiness level in English, Math, Reading, & Science • Helps students explore career options • Helps provide direction for life after HS • Testing will end of Feb. to beginning of March

  7. Post-Secondary Options • 4 Year and 2 Year Colleges • Must meet minimum college credit requirement and ACT test • Technical Colleges • Check program to determine requirements • Specialty/Proprietary Schools • Subjective entry • Military • ASVAB and H.S. Diploma

Requirements • College requirements and preparation • Educational Programs (Youth Options, PASS, Advanced Standing, etc.) • Academic Distinctions and Awards • Specific courses for each grade level and prerequisites • Certified Work Experience • Teacher’s Assistant/Independent Study • Distance Learning Courses

Teachers Assistant • Must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA- petition available • Does not count as one of your six classes for athletics • Need to take seven other courses…so in essence will replace your study hall • Grade will be pass/fail and will not affect your GPA • Can receive no more than one credit over entire HS career • Can take a TA for no credit if you so choose • Must complete TA application • Course numbers: TA for credit 2991 and 2992, TA for no credit 31 and 32

  11. Certified Work Experience(CWE) • School supervised work experience during school hours • Don’t have to leave school and go directly to work • Removed from program if you are failing at any grading period and if you have any unexcused absences • Students can earn ½ credit per semester of CWE (must work at approximately 10-15 per week) • As a junior you are allowed to leave early for one hour…after 7th period or come in late…start 2nd period

  12. Independent Study • Must be approved by teacher • Offers students the ability to take a course not offered in the registration handbook • Designed to provide students an advanced opportunity in a specific subject area • Course content and requirements vary depending on arrangement between teacher and student • Course numbers are 51 and 52

Emerging Technologies (Durand HS) AP Psychology (Durand HS) Does not replace US History-Must take in addition to US History Medical Terminology (CVTC) Sign Language (NTC) We can not guarantee a second Sign Language course for college entrance Intro to Sociology (CVTC) Intro to College Writing (Eng. 110 UWMWC) Must still take English 11 Distance Learning Classes

  14. Distance Learning Notes: • English 110 requires a college placement test and state youth options form • Sociology and Med. Term. require a CVTC youth options form • Sign Language requires a NTC youth options form • All students must sign a contract with district and must earn a C or better • Limited room, if needed GPA will be used • English 110, Sociology, Med.Term, and Sign Lang. offer dual credit- college and HS credit

  15. Agriculture=Science??? • Starting 2009-10 school year • Plants, Greenhouse & Landscaping, Vet. Science, and Food Science will be accepted as elective and science credit • Will count towards your two credits of science • Students must still attempt physical science and biology or biology and chemistry • At this time we are unsure if they will count towards your three credits of science for collegiate entrance • Plan accordingly!!!!

  16. Summer School 2012 • Runs four weeks from June 18th to July 13th • Classes run Mon.-Fri. in the morning • This year we will offer Math and/or English/Social Studies • Session 1 8:00-10:15 and Session 2 10:30-12:45 • Students can earn ½ credit for each • Grades are on a Pass/Fail basis • Phy. Ed. offered in afternoon for ¼ credit

  17. Driver’s Education • Must be 14 year and 8 months at the beginning of the semester • Cost is $325 • Questions contact Safety and Respect Driving school • Summer 2012- July 16th-Aug. 3rd

Physical Education and Health • Physical Education 9 • Advanced Fitness • Body Shop Fitness • Team Sports • Lifetime Activities • Outdoor Adventures • Health (Does not count as PE credit) • You will have to take at least one course junior or senior year • Can take courses multiple times • Classes will be taught both semester • All PE teachers will teach

Registration Sheets • Please check Pre-Printed ID labels • Please review required courses already listed • Decide which semester you want Personal Finance and cross out other semester • Do I need more math, science, and/or foreign language? • Do you need to make up a failed course…if so plan on summer school or reenroll next year

Registration Sheets cont… • Choose 4 alternatives and rank them…choose them carefully as if you would have to take them!!! • Total credits and circle at the top left of the registration sheet • Write clearly so Mrs. Brenner can read it!!! • Remember need six classes to participate in co-curriculars…WIAA rule • Registration sheets will be collected on Thursday Feb. 2nd at the beginning of your English class • Students who do not return a completed registration sheet will be required to register during their study hall that day

  21. Registering for Courses • Course numbers: odd=1st semester and even=2nd semester • Make sure course number matches course title • Choices do not equal class period • If course is two semesters then you must enter it in both semesters • If course has two course numbers and meets for only one semester please choose semester in which you want course…(example-Foods 1) • Please pay attention to courses that meet 1 semester vs. 2 semester • Most, but not all, electives meet for one semester (exception being Accounting, Adv. Woods, music courses, foreign language, and Intro to Art)

Options for Next Year • AP US History vs. US History • Do I continue with foreign language? • Do I need more math and science? • Do I take more than one science and/or math course? • Which semester do I take Personal Finance? • Do I take PE next year? • Distance Learning is it right for me? • Do you have a job?...CWE • Do I still need a study hall with AO? • Electives, choose them wisely

Final Registration Notes: • New Courses: Health, Photography II, Computer Technology, and Distance Learning Courses • Numerous course title changes • Statistics now offered both semesters • Web Page and Design and Basic Electricity are newer courses • Plants, Greenhouses, and Landscaping is transcripted credit at CVTC worth three credits • Journalism: must receive permission from Mr. Brieske • Show Choir vs. Chorus…can take both

  24. Sophomore Planning Conferences • Joint meeting with your parents during the school day to discuss: • Develop a post-secondary plan • Career Assessment • GPA/Class Rank • ACT/PSAT/Plan/Explore/ASVAB tests • Campus visits/job shadows • Career Goals/Dreams • Scholarships/Financial Aid
