  2. David: “Beloved” “As a man after God’s own heart. This was a designation given him by Samuel (1 Samuel 13:14), before he became corrupted by power. Although David did not live a spotless life, and even loaded his soul with heavy guilt (see 1 Kings 15:5), he knew how to repent, and to accept the results of his transgressions without rebellion (2 Samuel 12:13; 16:10; Ps 51). He was anillustrious king, the founder of a Hebrew dynasty that lasted for about 425 years, a great religious leader, a true servant of God, and an ancestor of the Messiah, who was at once David’s Son and Lord.” Horn, Siegfried H., Seventh-day Adventist Bible Dictionary, (Washington, D.C.: Review and Herald Publishing Association) 1979.

  4. “The history of David affords one of the most impressive testimonies ever given to the dangers that threaten the soul from power and riches and worldly honor--those things that are most eagerly desired among men. … David had enjoyed precious experiences of the love of God, … yet worldly success and honor so weakened the character of David that he was repeatedly overcome by the tempter. … The numbering of the people would show the contrast between the weakness of the kingdom when David ascended the throne and its strength and prosperity under his rule.” (E.
