Explore the diverse methods of brain scanning technology that are revolutionizing the way doctors diagnose psychological and medical issues. This overview covers key techniques including Computed Tomography (CT), which provides detailed images to identify abnormalities; Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), effective for assessing tissue damage and abnormalities; Positron Emission Tomography (PET), which measures brain activity to detect diseases like Alzheimer's; and Electroencephalography (EEG), monitoring brain waves for conditions such as seizures. Discover how these technologies aid in accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Today’s Objective • The diverse methods used to scan the bran: practical use that can aid doctors to determine psychological & medical issues.
1. Computed Tomography Scan (CT) • Uses X rays to get detailed pictures of body parts and the brain.
Used for finding abnormalities in parts of your body and brain. EX.- Tumors, cysts, enlarged parts, cancers, foreign objects, internal bleeding. Help guide needles during biopsies. Like slices of bed. Images can be combined to create 3D images
2. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) • Uses a large magnet, combined with radio waves to take pictures of the head. • Show tissue damage, inflammation, tumors, blood flow.
Show tissue damage, inflammation, tumors, blood flow/ clots, abnormalities. Plaques on a brain with MS
3. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) • Measures brain activity by injecting the person with positively charged particles (glucose) and seeing which parts of the brain are activated. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_myFX7-4pJw&feature=fvsr
Used to check for decreased or increased brain activity which can indicate diseases such as Alzheimer’s, MS, Parkinson’s, stroke, schizophrenia & cancers.
4. Electroencephalograph (EEG) • Metal electrodes are placed all over your head to measure its brainwaves.
Helps diagnose head injuries, infections, sleep disorders, investigate unconsciousness, and monitor the brain during surgery
