  1. Ambient Backscatter

What is it? • Top researchers at UW have spent countless hours testing the new device, but before looking at the promise, let’s look at the hardware. • Researchers are calling this device “ambient backscatter,” which they define as “transform(ing) existing wireless signals into both a source of power and a communication medium” (Vincent, Liu). • So what is it? • two battery-free devices utilize existing RF (Radio Frequency) wireless signals in order to transmit messages back and forth. This new device provides a smarter future for homes as well as concrete buildings. .

Fun fact • Within the context of the article, the researchers suggest that this new device can be placed within the concrete of a building and inform maintenance when trouble arises in the foundation. Because the device harnesses and encompasses a very hands-free type of wireless communication, such a device is a perfect example of a telecommunications system. In this type of system, communication is from a distance by using electrical signals or electromagnetic waves to transmit the content

  4. Cont… • This device is similar to cellular telephones in that it allows for better accessibility of media. Ambient backscatter is merely a new medium to be tested and bought by a larger company. Because the device needs little to no human care or battery operating system, the device allows for easier connection to digital form. If for example the device is loaded within a computer it would allow for constant computing when a power source is not available; thus taking the current status quo of operating systems and allowing for advancement in 24/7 communication systems.

Pros • The ambient backscatter allows for further propel in the digital world by offering a continuous system • It needs little maintenance • Remembering back to the device supposedly being able to detect when a building foundation is in trouble, it has a technology that could open up a whole new world of “smart technology.” Smart homes have long been the dream for some individuals in society. With the technology stored in UWs device, smart homes could be a reality. Using its poorly detailed sensory capabilities, the device can be stored into furniture, walls, and appliances

  6. Cons • Such technology can further the instant gratification era. • Who is going to buy the patent? Will it really benefit them? • The product runs into huge complications if the RF and TV tower signals are down or messed with

How can this support 21st century learner? • The use of ambient backscatter in the classroom will allow the students to grow in the use of technology. • It opens the door to new opportunities. • They will consistently have a source of power to use to create projects etc. • Like any technology, this can be used in a negative way… • This is why we need to still monitor the use of media, internet, and other technologies in the classroom.
