Final Project FOODIENATION.COM A MEMBERSHIP WEBSITE DEDICATED TO DISCOUNTED DINING AT THE AREA’S BEST RESTAURANTS Jon Cotrone OPIM 5894 Web Design and Evaluation Professor Dowding February 4, 2010
Table of contents • Overview • Target Audience • Competitive Analysis • Expert Analysis • Data Collection • Data Analysis • Conclusions and Recommendations
Overview • Foodienation.com is a membership website that offers discounts to some of the areas best restaurants • For a $10 monthly fee, the site provides a 30-50% discounts on restaurants off nights (Mon-Wed) • Since this is strictly an online business the design and usability of the site is extremely important • The companies value proposition is that it offers an unlimited amount of restaurant visits per month for the same fee, it also offers rare access to top restaurants at a discount.
Target Audience • The sites target audience consists of two distinct demographics • The first is the 25-35 year old, both male and female, this group is targeted because of their time, lack of family responsibility and increasing income • The second group is the 55-75 year old both make and female, this group is targeted for very similar reasons: its time, independence from family and work responsibility and financial independence • The site will strongly promote purchasing memberships (i.e. 6 months for $50) as gifts which broadens our audience to a very wide demographic
Competitive Analysis • As a restaurant related website I choose to do a competitive/comparative analysis with two popular websites of a similar nature, one national and one local • Restaurant.com is a site that offers $25 coupons for $10, netting the customer $15, this is a national site • WFAS radio station has a similar “restaurant of the week” page facilitated by a third party • Reastuarant.com looks very professional and has quality usability, the WFAS page looked more like a template and required many improvements.
Expert Analysis • Restaurant.com was used for both the Heuristic and checklist expert analysis • Hueristics was a great tool for reviewing the site in a big picture/macro context and showed that, overall the site had strong design and usability • The project checklist allowed me to realize some specific/micro design deficiencies that likely would have been overlooked, the site fared well overall • While both methods offered important contributions both also had areas that were not applicable to my project, utilizing both tools were key to this review
Data Collection • The data collection was administered through a series of task based activities • The subject was provided with a wire frame version of my site in order to accomplish the tasks • I was the moderator and I read a script to each subject including the actual tasks • The tasks were completed in a prioritized order • I did not assist during the activity and I only discussed feedback after tasks were completed
Data Analysis • The expectations of a high success rate were not met • Instead of the sites infancy providing an easier case, it proved more difficult • I learned of some very important deficiencies in the site design throughout the data collection process • Two major objectives of my site were ambiguous • When they stumbled, the younger demographic stumbled on clarity more than functionality • The older demographic stumbled on both
Conclusions & Recommendations • Customer service clarification • Improve clarity of site concept • More white space • Bigger fonts • Fewer and bigger pictures • Pictures with more relation
