  1. MICE and MuCool Coupling Magnet Progress 2008-06-04 MICE Group Institute of Cryogenics and Superconductivity Technology Harbin Institute of Technology, China

  2. ICST Progress as of 4 June 2008 • Completion of small coil winding • Completion of assembly of small coil cold mass (welding of cover plate and cooling tubing) (Pass leakage check) • Fabrication of test cryostat for small coil (Pass leakage check) • Fabrication of cryogenic-valve box for test station (under leakage check) • Fabrication of Al mandrel and winding tools for large test coil Done and mounted on the winding machine. • Development of various tools for magnetic test and winding of coils • Cryogenic-transfer lines for test station are under fabrication Most of components (SS piping, flexible lines, vacuum bellow joints, etc.) were procured and arrived in ICST. • Construction of LN2 test system for small coil and cold diodes(Done) • Updated design for test coils(Done) • SC joints made by ICST(under test at LBNL, key points!!!)

  3. The ICST Coupling Solenoid Design Coupling Magnet Cold Mass Coupling Magnet Cryostat

  4. Basic Magnet Parameters

  5. Magnet Load Lines 800 600 Conductor Current (A) 400 200 0

  6. Purpose of Test Coil 1 • This coil was the first superconducting solenoid wound with the coupling coil conductor. • The joint design and the coil taps for the quench protection system were verified in this magnet. • This coil was part of the crew training process. • Test coil 1 will produce enough field so that the magnet can be used for cold diode tests and other sorts of tests to be done in a magnetic field at 300 K, 77 K and 4.2 K. (The cold diode tests are important.) • Both of the superconducting test coils will be cooled using the ICST refrigerator.

  7. Small Test Coil (Test Coil 1) Finished Test Coil with Cooing Tube Test Coil 1 Mounted for Insertion into the Test Cryostat Vacuum Vessel

  8. Schematic of the ICST Test Facility Control Valve Box Refrigerator 1500 mm ID Magnet Coil 3D Drawing, from ICST Harbin

  9. ICST Cryogenic Test Facility ICST Linde Refrigerator for Testing ICST Valve Box for Test Facility The ICST test facility is designed for cooling down and training the large coils (including the finished MICE and MuCool coupling coils).

  10. Conductor Splice Fabrication • The coupling coils will have a large number of splices. • ICST has made a number of splices by hand. These are being tested by LBNL. • The resistance per splice must be < 10 nW. Up-down splice is hand soldered. Side-by-side Splice fabricated for Testing at LBNL

  11. Up-Down and Side-by-side Joints • Up-down splices are suitable for joints at the ends of the coils. • Side-by-side splices are of interest for joints away from the coil end. • Both types of splices are being tested.

  12. Superconductor Splice Tests LBNL Splice Sample Holders

  13. Test Data for a 1-meter Long Splice Type of Joint = Up-down Joint Length = 1.02 m Type of Solder = 96.0Sn-3.5Ag-0.5Cu Solder Thickness = unknown, but > 100 mm Magnetic Field = not given, but probably zero Rj = 1.06 nW over whole length Rj = 0.212 nW center 0.25 m This splice is acceptable.

  14. Purpose of Test Coil 2 • The winding parameters for the coupling coil will be established by winding a full diameter test coil. • The 2nd test coil will be cooled down using the ICST refrigerator in a cryostat suitable for the training the large test coil and the coupling magnets. • Test coil 2 will be strained by the cool down and the magnetic field so that the worst case strain seen by the MICE coupling coils is seen in the test coil. • There will be a full scale test of the coupling coil cold diode and resistor quench protection system with the test coil sub-divided into four circuits.

  15. Large Test Coil (Test Coil 2) Progress Welding the Test Coil 2 Mandrel Test Coil 2 Finished Mandrel Mounted on the ICST Coil Winding Machine

  16. Plans for Test Coils and the MuCool Coil • Winding the large test coilBy middle of July • If start at the first week of June, it is expected to finish winding around the middle of July at rate of 2~3 layers/day. There will be at least 5 SC joints in it. The type of SC joint and approach to wind the joint in the coil have to be determined as soon as possible (by early June) • LN2 test for small coil By middle of June • LN2 test for cold diodes By June 20th • Construction of test station for small coil By end of June • Cryogenic-test for small coil By end of July • Cold Diode Tests in Liquid Helium By the end of July • Assembly of large coil cold mass Bymiddle of August to weld cover plate and cooling tubing/helium vessel, leakage check, to install quench protection circuit and instrumentation, etc.

  17. Test and MuCool Coil Plans Cont. • Fabrication of test cryostat for large coil By end of July Depends on the available funds from HIT. • Cryo-test of large coil By mid September • To update design of MuCool/MICE coupling magnets By end of July • Fabrication of MuCool Coil mandrel By end of July • Winding of MuCool Coil By middle of October • Assembly of MuCool Coil Cold Mass By end of November to weld cover plate and cooling tubing/helium vessel, leakage check, to install quench protection circuit and instrumentation, etc. • Cryogenic-test of MuCool Coil Cold Mass By middle of December • Assembly of MuCool Magnet Cryostat By end of February, 2009 • Cryo-test of MuCool Magnet By end of March, 2009

  18. Finish winding 1st MICE coil 12/31/08. Finish and train 1st MICE coil assembly 2/28/09. Finish winding 2nd MICE coil 3/15/09. Finish 1st MICE magnet assembly 4/30/09. Finish and train 2nd MICE coil assembly 5/08/09. 1st MICE magnet acceptance test finish 6/02/09. Ship 1st MICE magnet to LBNL 6/15/09. Finish 2nd MICE magnet assembly 7/15/09. 2nd MICE magnet acceptance test finish 8/31/09 Ship 2nd MICE magnet to LBNL 9/10/09. Milestones for MICE Magnets

  19. Status of Funding • The first funding of 500k Yuan RMB from HIT almost used up. • The second funding of 1.0 million Yuan RMB is approved at the early of this year, but held by HIT because recent change of the superior Administration in China. • ICST has submitted the funding application proposal again to the HIT. It is expected that ICST will get the funds in hand by the end of this June. • The construction of the test cryostat for large test coil will have to be delayed till having the funds, as well as the cryo-test for large test coil. • It is expected to complete the construction of the test cryostat for large test coil by the end of this July or early of this August, and to carry out the cryo-test for the large test coil in late August or early September.
