  1. Daresbury MICE Progress Andrew Moss Joe Orrett Peter Corlett

  2. Initial inspections of 4616 circuits • LBL equipment arrives Jan 05 • Initial inspections • 4616 circuits look ok !

  3. Solid state pre drivers • ISIS and CERN use Dressler 4.5KW amps • Currently these are not available, although this may change • Companies in the UK and US have indicated they can produce them ( ~ $70K) • Only issue may be the cost, although the original Dressler units were not cheap • RAL specification has been sent to a UK company for a price quote • Possiblity of MICE, RAL, CERN ? group buy

  4. HT for 4616 • New charging PSU’s will be ordered ~ 3k • Crowbar switches including firing circuits e2v ~ 14K, ABB ~ 15K • Capacitor bank 22uF 40KV PPM ~ 5k • Construction costs • Visit to CERN to assess obsolete HT equipment, systems were not suitable for MICE, but would be ok as a test set. • Orders for charging unit, cap bank and crowbar unit about to be made

  5. ALE 152A 20 kV 1500 J/s charge rate £2973 22 μF Capacitor £4102

  6. Crowbar SystemTwo Choices • e2v MA3536A • Thyratron based. • Max HT 25 kV • Peak Current 10 kA • Price £13,500 • ABB Crowbar Switch • Semiconductor stack • Max HT 20 kV • Peak Current 5.5 kA • £14,925

  7. Crowbars e2v MA3536A ABB(52 kVshown)

  8. High Power Coaxial Components • 4616 Test set-up. 3 1/8 “ coax 9 3/16 “ coax Water load 2.5MW 12 foot long 9 3/16 “ - 3 1/8” Coax reducer 4616 Amplifier Directional Monitor coupler

  9. Complete System (4616 + TH116) high power test set-up 3 1/8 “ coax 9 3/16 “ coax Water load 2.5MW 12 foot long 4616 Amplifier TH116 Amplifier

  10. Items required in the short term • 3 1/8” – 9 3/16” coax reducer (to allow 9 3/16” water load to be used on 4616 tests) - £2 k • Directional Coupler - £1.7 k x 2 • Water Load - £12.2 k • Various straights / Bends ~ £10 k • Power meters – use existing HP power meters • Total = £25.6 k

  11. 4616 circuit strip down • 4616 tubes sent to RAL for testing • Manufacturer's expect the tubes will be U/S • New tubes around $40K • Sockets look in good condition, possibly only need new finger strip • ½ wavelength input couplers tested ok at RAL • Original cabinets will be repainted with new panels where needed

  12. MICE test area • In an existing plant room • Large electrical and water supplies • Room to expand if necessary

  13. Electrical Dept ready to design and construct power requirements Visit to RAL to see systems in action Water services close by under floor duct Construction of test water panel by Oct 05 Original piping of the circuits looks ok, but will be assessed Services

  14. The plan • Majority of work this year will be on 4616 circuits • Expect to run first circuit by the end of the year into a test load • Purchase of components to test 1MW systems may be possible, water loads etc • 1MW amplifiers will not be striped down this year • Still no indication of when TH116 will become available • Cost of refurbishment items looks broadly similar to original costing, work continues in this area
