  3. Striking it rich • A man named shufelt made out pretty good. But not all miners struck it rich. As a matter of fact most did not. • Today $82.72 would be $ 1,893 you do the math on the others.

  4. January 1848 • Gold was discovered on John Sutter’s farm • By the end of 1848 they had taken $6 million in gold from the American river.

  5. GOLD FEVER • Thousands drop what they are doing and head for California.

  6. San Francisco • Almost all of san Francisco’s 900 residents left to chase gold. • The city become a temporary ghost town.

  7. California Gold …free the talking! • The San Francisco area was swarmed with people from all over the world

  8. How long did the gold rush last? • The Gold Rush started in 1849 and lasted for seven years. • Even though it lasted for a few years it had lasting effects on California’s economy.

  9. How many people got rich • Every few people got rich and the one who did, wasted it all on gambling and wild spending.

  10. Boomtowns • As people rushed to a new location to look for gold ,they built new communities, called Boomtowns .

  11. What lasted effects did the Gold Rush have? • Even though it lasted for a few years it had lasting effects on California’s economy.
