  2. In the Beginning • Born February 22nd, 1732 • Brother Lawrence died in 1752 • Inherited Mount Vernon

  3. George’s Interaction with the French • 1754 • Lead Virginia forces to fight the French at Fort Duquesne. • Built, defended and surrendered Fort Necessity • Virginia forces were disbanded to separate companies • 1755 • Appointed colonel • Commanded the new Virginia forces to help defeat and capture Fort Duquesne

  4. 1758-1770’s • After the victory at Fort Duquesne, Washington resigns from being commander of Virginia forces • Went to attend private affairs at Mount Vernon • Elected for a term in the House of Burgesses at Shenandoah Valley • In 1759 • Started a 15 year term in Virginia House of Burgesses

Head of the Continental Army • June 15, 1775 George Washington was appointed commander in chief of the Continental Army • Didn’t ask for a salary on his expense report • July 3rd, Washington assumes command of the main American army in Cambridge, Massachusetts • In August Washington established a naval army to battle the British off the coast of New England

Washington Pre-War • The British evacuated Boston • Washington left Cambridge, Massachusetts with his army for New York • His New York safety report, included that they were still supplying British ships • The British forces including General William Howe, stayed concentrated on Staten Island • Attacked Long Island • Washington’s attempts to fight Howe failed.

The Revolutionary War • The British army attacked and caused the retreat of Washington and his army off the Manhattan island • Washington was pushed backed by the British army all the way to the western side of the Delaware • He lead a surprise attack against the British army encamped in Trenton, New Jersey • This was the famous crossing of the Delaware, and lead to a victory for Washington. • This lead to a long but victorious campaign.

Washington A Celebrity • Washington became famous after the Surrender at York Town, the Treaty of Paris, and the end of the war • Between 1783 and 1786 George Washington fell laid low • In 1786 he voiced his dissatisfaction with the Articles of Confederation • Attended the 1787 Constitutional Convention of Philadelphia

  10. The President of the United States • In 1789 George Washington becomes the first President of the United States of America • His Vice-President is John Adams • They serve their positions for two terms

  11. What did he do as the President? • Signed the Treaty of San Lorenzo • Allowed American navigation past the Mississippi River • Signed Jay’s Treaty • Forced Great Britain to evacuate western forts • Kept relations up until the war of 1812

His Final Days • George Washington’s term ended in 1796 • Stayed involved with government matters • Took commander of American Armies during the XYZ affairs • War was avoided due to the Adams administration • Died December 14, 1799 at his homestead in Mount Vernon • Throat infection that he caught during the winter
