  2. The Reasons for the Marches • The marches started as a consequence of Jimmy Lee Jackson being killed by a security man at a demonstration for civil rights • Main goal of the marches was to achieve the right to vote

  3. 7th March 1965: The first March“Bloody Sunday“ • 525 – 600 civil rights marchers • state troopers were awaiting them at the Edmund Pettus Bridge • The marchers were knocked down 

  4. 9th March 1965: The 2nd March • Organized by Martin Luther King • About 2500 marchers • They stopped at the Edmund Pettus Bridge • Held a short prayer session • Turned back around

  5. Consequences of the 2nd March • 3 white ministers who had come for the march were beaten • James Reeb was taken to the University Hospital of Birmingham but died • Media explained their concern • Blacks were bitter, because Jimmy Lee Jackson was not mentioned in the media 

  6. 21st March 1965: The 3rd March • Led by Martin Luther King • About 8000 people • Not only blacks took part, but also Asians, Whites and Latinos • Arrived in Montgomery on 25th March 1965 • Martin Luther King held his speech “How long, Not long.“
