  1. DAY 1 JOURNAL • WRITE 1 PAGE ENTRY ON HOW SHAW MIGHT FEEL HAVING COME OUT OF THE RECENT BATTLE • FEELINGS TO INCLUDE: • FEAR, SADNESS, RELIEF, ANXIETY WHY DOES SHAW SEEM TO BE SO DISTRACTED AT THE PARTY, WHY DOES HE JUMP WHEN THE WINDOW FALLS. WHY IS HE NOT SURE ABOUT LEADING THE 54TH MASS.

  2. JUST THE FACTS Approximately 620,000 men-360,000 Northerners and 260,000 Southerners-died in the four-year conflict, a figure that tops the total fatalities of all other wars in which America has fought. Of these numbers, approximately 110,000 Unionand 94,000 Confederate men died of wounds received in battle.

  3. Every effort was made to treat wounded men within 48 hours; most primary care was administered at field hospitals located far behind the front lines.

  4. Those who survived were then transported by unreliable and overcrowded ambulances-two-wheeled carts or four-wheeled wagons-to army hospitals located in nearby cities and towns.

  5. While the average soldier believed the bullet was his most nefarious foe, UNFORTUNATELY, disease was the biggest killer of the war. Of the Federal dead, roughly threeout of fivedied of disease, and of the Confederate, perhaps two out of three

About half of the deaths from disease during the Civil War were caused by intestinal disorders, mainly • typhoid fever- a common worldwide illness, transmitted by the ingestion of food or water contaminated with the feces of an infected person. • Diarrhea- is the condition of having three or more loose or liquid bowel movements per day. It is a common cause of death in developing countries and the second most common cause of infant deaths worldwide. • Dysentery- is an inflammatory disorder of the intestine, especially of the colon, that results in severe diarrhea containing mucus and/or blood in the feceswith fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, dysentery can be fatal

  8. AMPUTATIONS The most common Civil War small arms ammunition was the dreadful minie ball, which tore an enormous wound on impact:, A hit to an extremity usually shattered any bone encountered. Of the approximately 175,000 wounds to the extremities received among Federal troops, about 30,000 led to amputation; roughly the same proportion occurred in the Confederacy.

  11. SUMMARY • EVEN AFTER SURGERY THERE WAS A GREAT CHANCE FOR INFECTION. • 2/3 OF ALL WOUNDED SOLDIERS WOULD DIE OF INFECTION • REMEMBER IF YOU HAD A GUT SHOT THERE WAS NO HELP. YOU WOULD DIE ! • FINALLY DON’T FORGET, CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS WERE EVEN LESS LIKELY THEN UNION SOLDIERS TO GET GOOD MEDICAL CARE.( WITH THE EXCEPTION OF OFFICERS)

  12. Beat the Odds: Civil War Wounds • Here are three different situations. Using what you know about chances of survival, rank the wounded soldiers from “best” to “worst”. • 1. Colonel Abner Morgan is a wounded Confederate cavalry officer. He was shot through the left leg, wounding his horse as well. The wounded leg was shot through the calf. He is bleeding very heavily. • 2. Private Frank Weaver is from the 129th Pennsylvania. He was wounded with a bullet piercing his abdomen. It entered the left front and shot through to the back. • 3. Private Clark Hannah is from the 87th Indiana. He was wounded in the right leg, in the thigh, just below the hip.

ARE THEY BEING TO TOUGH • AND HOW DO YOU FEEL THAT YOU HAVEN’T GOT YOUR UNIFORMS YET LIKE THE WHITE SOLDIERS? • THOMAS HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT WHAT’S HAPPENED • JUPITER, JOHN, TRIP WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THOMAS

  17. DAY 3 JOURNAL • Trip, Thomas, Jupiter, John how do you feel about the fact that the govt. doesn’t feel you are worthy to receive the pay that white soldiers receive. Shaw or Cabot how do you feel about the men not receiving pay. • If you could bring one thing with you if you were going to war what would that be. Name it and tell me why. Draw it.

JOURNAL 5 • Knowing that you are going to battle tomorrow what do you want to say to the rest of the men. • Write a 5 to 7 sentence speech on what you are feeling about the upcoming battle, how do you feel about the journey you have made to this point. What do you think about knowing you might die tomorrow. • How can you encourage the other soldiers
