Cycling • 10.6km of cycle network. • Existing Cycle Super Highway from Wandsworth to Westminster, with 3 more opening by 2013 that go through Westminster. • 143 cycle hire docking station locations (Barclays/Mayor of London cycle hire scheme): scheme currently has 130,000 members. Walking • Legible London: 139 signs installed already, with 126 to be installed in November 2011, and a further 74 proposed across Westminster in time for the Olympics. • Public realm improvement projects include Leicester Square, Oxford Circus, Shaftesbury Avenue, other action plan areas. Blue Ribbon Network • 3 Piers (Millbank, Westminster, Embankment), providing river bus services. • Regent’s Canal waterbus. Highways Network • Over 76,000 on street parking bays, including 700 disabled parking bays and over 26,000 resident parking bays. • 3400 off street car parking spaces in car parks, most of which are available 24/7. • Car club with 115 parking bays. • Electric car charging scheme with 21 charging bays. • Congestion charge covers around 1/3 of the borough. • Highway network consists of around 350km of carriageway, and 620km of footways, which the City Council or the Mayor of London are responsible for. • 22,000 licensed taxis in London, along with Pedicabs and TukTuk’s. Main Mode of Transport: • Main part of journeysin Westminster: 38% are undertaken on foot, 35% LUL and Bus, 14% car/motorbike, 3% cycling. London Underground • 10 of the 12 London Underground lines run through Westminster. • 32 London Underground Stations. • 4 of the 10 busiest underground stations, 2010: Victoria (2nd, 80 mil passengers), Oxford Circus (4th, 70 mil), Paddington (7th, 44 mil), Piccadilly Circus (10th, 40 mil). Busiest is Waterloo (82 mil). • In total, Westminster stations handle 600 million passengers per year, with 12 stations handling at least 20 million passengers each. Bus Network • 157 daytime, night bus and 24 hour bus routes run through the city. • Around 500 bus stops in Westminster. • European, National and local express coach services also serve the city, along with sightseeing operators. • 12 million passengers use Victoria Coach Station annually. Mainline Rail Network • 4 mainline railway stations in Westminster. • 2 Direct/High Speed connections to airports: Heathrow Express (Paddington), Gatwick Express (Victoria). • 3 of the 10 busiest stations in the UK, 2010: Victoria (2nd, 70mil passengers), Charing Cross (5th, 37 mil), Paddington (7th, 29 mil). Busiest is Waterloo (88 mil). Future Projects • Crossrail Line 1 under construction, potential for line 2. • Station and line upgrades upgrates (mainline and tube).
