  2. The Enlightenment A new intellectual movement of the 1600s that stressed reason and thought and the power of individuals to solve problems “The Age of Reason”

Legacy of the Enlightenment • Belief in Progress • Human reason can solve social problems • Social Equality • A Secular Outlook • Focus more on science and reason as opposed to religious beliefs and teachings • Importance of the Individual • Each person should judge right from wrong • Individuals make up society

  4. The American Revolution • The English colonies in North America were highly populated by 1770 (over 2 million people) • Thrived on trade with Europe • Obeyed English laws

  5. Tensions Rise • Britain expected the colonists to help pay the debt created during the French and Indian War (1754-1763) • Stamp Act – 1765 – taxes due for stamps on printed materials “TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION”

  6. Boston Tea Party • 1773 • Colonists dumped a load of British tea into the Boston Harbor to protest tea taxes • King George III ordered that Boston close their port
