  3. Research Question: There is a strong sentiment that the educational level of the teacher will trickle down into the classroom and will reveal itself through student achievement. What then, is the result of teachers’ academic preparation as it trickles down to student achievement in the classroom? The question that this paper poses is, “Does teacher degree level show a correlating increase in student achievement in schools of the Coachella Valley?”

  4. Purpose: • Show that there is a correlation between • the percentage of staff holding master’s degrees • Student Achievement • As measured by API scores

  5. Literature • The research on the value of a teacher's advanced degree is mixed: • some studies show that while additional teacher education has a positive correlation with student achievement in some cases. • others find that it negatively affects achievement

  6. Exceptions • an advanced degree in math and science for math and science teachers appears to influence students' achievement. • The same results were not found to be true for teachers of English or history.

  7. Methodology • The researchers chose to look at • California Standards Test (CST) scores in Math and English • Compare it to teachers’ education level indicated on the School Accountability Report Card.

  8. Chosen schools were from: • Coachella Valley Unified School District, • Desert Sands Unified School District • Palm Springs Unified School District. • The study looked at the correlation between student proficiency in math and English, as compared to the percentage of teachers holding a Master’s or higher at a given site.

  9. The study began by randomly selecting • 10% of the elementary schools, • 10% of the middle schools and • 10% of the high schools in the three districts • The schools chosen would serve as the representative sample of the schools at each level.

  11. Conclusion • The findings of this study did not reveal any relationship between student achievement and teacher educational level.

  12. Example: • Van Buren Elementary • API of 848 • 16.8% of the teachers there hold a Master’s degree. • Gerald Ford Elementary • API of 834 • 35.1% of teachers there holding a Master’s degree. • Using these two examples, there is a 22 point discrepancy between the API scores of these schools.
