  1. ACT + Writing test scores have arrived! • All of our students have received their February 20th ACT scores in the mail and the colleges you sent scores to have also received your scores. Juniors involved in the March make-up ACT test date have not yet received their ACT scores back. • This presentation will help to understand how to interpret your ACT score report and determine whether you need to re-test for the ACT and/or take the SAT test for college admissions.

  2. What do your ACT scores mean? • The score range is from 1-36 (36 being the highest) in each subject area. • Each subject area (English, Reading, Math, Science & Writing) were all issued individual subject test scores. • The Composite score is the AVERAGE score of all of the individual subject scores from all 5 tested subject areas: English, Reading, Math, Science, and Writing. • The STEM score represents the overall performance in both the Math and Science tests. • The ELA score represents the overall performance in English, Reading, and Writing.

  3. Minimum admissions standards to UNC system institutions (our 4- year public colleges/universities) • Appalachian StateEast Carolina • Elizabeth City State Fayetteville State • North Carolina A&T State North Carolina Central • NC School of the Arts North Carolina State • UNC-Asheville UNC-Chapel Hill • UNC-Charlotte UNC-Greensboro • UNC-Pembroke UNC-Wilmington • Western Carolina Winston-Salem State THEN…. 4. Private colleges in North Carolina and ACT scores • Private colleges in North Carolina do not have a set standard for minimum admissions like the UNC system colleges have. • You can look on their individual college websites OR search for their college stats using the College Board website to find out what their average ACT score ranges were for their current freshman class.

  5. Where does your ACT composite score fall? • It all depends on which colleges you are interested in applying to! • (Avg. score ranges based on 2017 admitted freshman) • Duke University- 31-34 (requires ACT + Writing) • Wake Forest is test optional (applicants must have personal interview) • UNC-Chapel Hill- 27-32 • NC State- 27-31 • Elon University- 25-29 • UNC Wilmington- 23-27 • Appalachian State Univ.- 23-27 • UNC-Charlotte- 22-27 • East Carolina Univ.- 20-24 • UNC-Greensboro- 20-25 (requires ACT + Writing) • High Point University is test optional • Guilford College is test optional • NC A&T State in Greensboro- 17-21 • Winston-Salem State- 17-19 • NC Community colleges use your ACT scores to help place you in the appropriate college courses.

  6. Great website to find out info. on colleges • Big Future by CollegeBoard: https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/ • Look up college stats: https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/find-colleges • Once there, type in the name of the college & select it • For each college you look at, click on the Applying link on the left hand side • Then scroll to the middle of the page and click on the SAT & ACT scores tab. Then choose SAT OR ACT • You can also see lots of other info. (cost, AP scores, application requirements) on each college by clicking on other tabs

  7. What is super scoring? • Some colleges and universities “super score” test scores when considering a student for admission. • A college/university can only super score IF they have 2 sets of test scores for a given student. For example, if a junior sent their February ACT + Writing scores to UNC-Greensboro (UNC-G) and then re-takes the ACT in June and reports those June ACT test scores to UNC-G, then UNC-G can take the BEST English score, the BEST Reading score, the BEST Math score, and the BEST science score and put them all together to make one “super score” . In other words, the best possible ACT composite score from 2 different test administrations.

  8. Where to go from here???? • If students were not pleased with their ACT + Writing test scores, they many want to re-take the ACT on one of their national Saturday morning test administrations. CCA is not an ACT testing center for these Saturday morning test administrations. Students will need to select a test center (typically close to their home). • For ACT prep before the test date, there’s plenty of ACT prep tools out there that they can take advantage of on a daily basis. This can help them prepare for another ACT test before they apply to college(s). Check the ACT prep tools here on Mrs. Bell’s guidance webpage: • https://goo.gl/2TaaWx

  10. NC colleges/universities that REQUIRE the ACT + Writing scores for admission If you decide to re-take the ACT, make sure you sign up to take the ACT + Writing if you plan to apply to any of these NC colleges & universities. They will NOT look at your ACT scores if you don’t take the additional Writing test. Forout of state colleges that require the ACT + Writing, look that information up here: ACT Writing test

  11. Should I take the SAT test instead? • Some students may want to take the SAT or the SAT Essay test instead of re-taking the ACT. That is completely up to the student on whether they want to do that. • Colleges look at both ACT and SAT scores submitted. • The SAT is different in that students ARE NOT tested on Science. The SAT is an aptitude test while the ACT is a curriculum based test. • Students will also need to see whether they need to take the SAT or the SAT Essay. Some colleges require the Essay portion of the SAT for admissions purposes. CHECK THE COLLEGE’S WEBSITE TO SEE. • Comparing your ACT score to an equivalent score on the SAT test & also to see which test you performed better on in order to see which test suits you best: http://convertyourscore.org/
