  3. NATO • After communism, NATO turned from a military force to a political force. • Made a policy stating an attack made against one NATO member, was an attack on NATO itself and all of it’s members.

  4. Warsaw Pact • A treaty formed on May 14, 1955 between Eastern Europe Socialist States. • Maintained power over eastern Europe as a communist military alliance until named “nonexistent” in 1991. • This was after most countries in the Warsaw Pact withdrew successfully in the 1980’s.

  5. Warsaw Pact • Created to counteract NATO when West Germany joined NATO in 1955. • Contained 8 countries: Soviet Union, Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Romania.

  6. Warsaw Pact • In 1956, Hungary tried to leave the treaty, and the Soviet Union sent forces to invade Hungary. • In 1968, the Czechoslovakian government began to show imperialistic tendencies and the Soviet Union invaded Czechoslovakia.

  7. NATO vs. Warsaw Pact

  8. Discussion Questions • When and why was NATO formed? • What was NATO’s main policy? • When was the Warsaw Pact signed? • What happened to a country that would try to leave the Warsaw Pact?
