  2. Patriots at War • The Green Mountain Boys led by Ethan Allen captured Fort Ticonderoga in May 1775. • Washington put cannons on the hills around Boston; the British left the city. • British advantages: -best navy in the world -well-trained and equipped soldiers -German mercenaries

  5. Defeat and Victory • Patriots suffered many defeats in New York City in 1776. • Nathan Hale was captured: “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.” • Washington crossed the Delaware River and surprised the British at Trenton, New Jersey, in December 1776.

  6. The Turning Point • British general John Burgoyne wanted to capture Albany, New York, and the Hudson River to cut the U.S. in two. • The Americans, led by General Benedict Arnold, defeated the British at the Battle of Saratoga. • This was the turning point of the war. The French agreed to join the Americans. • After Saratoga, Arnold joined the British army; he is one of the most famous traitors in history.

  8. African Americans in the Revolution • Many slaves gained their freedom by fighting in the British army. • Many African Americans fought with the Patriots. Many were freed from slavery.

  9. Women in the Revolution • Patriot women collected food, raised money, and made clothing for soldiers. • Mary Ludwig Hayes (Molly Pitcher) carried water to the soldiers. • Deborah Sampson dressed like a man and joined the army. • Other women wrote letters and led boycotts.

  10. Winter at Valley Forge • Washington’s army set up winter camp at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, in 1777. • The army was short of food and clothing; many soldiers didn’t have shoes. • More than 2500 men died of hunger, cold, and disease.
