MISSION STATEMENT NSBE’s Mission is to: Increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.

LITTLE KNOWN BLACK HISTORY FACTS • Thomas L. Jennings • First African American to receive a patent • Invented a dry-cleaning process in 1821 • Used money to purchase relatives out of slavery and to support abolitionist causes • Henry Blair • Second African American to receive a patent • Invented corn seed planter in 1834 and a cotton planter in 1836 • Could not read or write; signed patent with an “X”
