Benefits of Growing Fruit Trees
E N D
Growing fruit trees in your backyard has many benefits. Firstly, they create a lovely shady place to relax or for the children to play under. This will save them getting sunburned and possibly developing skin cancer in later life. Secondly these trees look beautiful. Not only do they spend several weeks of the year covered in pretty blossoms, but after that the developing fruit looks attractive for months. Their leaves are quite attractive and the shady branches give birds somewhere to rest and cool off.
In the fall, foliage will turn an attractive shade of orange or pink on some fruit trees such as the persimmon. Then of course there is all that healthy fresh fruit that you can pick and eat year after year. It is almost free - and you know exactly what has been sprayed on it. In many cases, you will not need to spray the same toxic chemicals onto your fruit tree as must be sprayed onto commercial orchards.
You may also be able to can the fruit, or make many lovely desserts, jams, fruit leathers or conserves with it. If you choose citrus fruits you will be able to juice the fruit to make healthy and tasty drinks. And you will get two crops per year with citrus. And if you love a certain fruit such as persimmons, but cannot buy them often due to their expense or because they are simply not available, then you can have a ready supply if you can grow that fruit tree in your own backyard. So learn how to grow a fruit tree. You will be surprised how easy and rewarding it is.
Not all trees can be grown in all zones of course, but you will be surprised at how easy it is to create a mini-climate where a fruit tree will grow quite well. For those fruit trees that love warm weather, positioning it near the wall of a shed or a brick wall that will both absorb and reflect the heat will often make it possible for a tree to thrive. Or if you live in a hot spot and would like to grow say, apples, then you may be able to find a place that is cooler than surrounding country due to the presence of water or shade trees. Or you could find a fruit tree that will suit that climate to be sure of getting at least some fruit.
