By Brandon Metra Inner Planets vs. Outer Planets
The Inner Planets • Mercury, Venus , Earth, Mars. • Composed mostly of rock. • Each has solid surfaces. • Planets closest to the sun. • Smaller than the outer planets. • No rings around these planets.
The Outer Planets • Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus. • Much bigger than the inner planets. • Made mostly of hydrogen and helium. • Known as “gas giants”. • Rings around most of these planets. • Each has its own system of moons.
Pluto, Why its Not a Planet • A planet must be significantly larger than its neighbors. • Pluto’s largest moon is half the size of it. • Does not have enough gravity to dominate things around it. • A planet must be an object that orbits the sun.
