  3. Youth • Born January 30, 1882 • Wealthy family • Not interested in politics in his youth

  4. Eleanor Roosevelt • Distant cousin… • Eleanor at the age of 20 volunteered at a settlement house in the slums of New York • Showed Roosevelt much about the underprivileged

  5. Battle with Polio • Summer of 1921, was vacationing with his parents when he suffered an attack of poliomyelitis – left FDR’s legs paralyzed • Gave FDR more determination to succeed with his political career

  6. FOUR terms in office: • FDR ran for his first term in 1932 – won in a landslide over Hoover • FDR was reelected in 1936, and again in 1940 for keeping America out of the war. • In 1944 FDR was elected to his fourth term, died while in office

  7. First days in office known as… • THE HUNDRED DAYS • Why? • During the 1st 100 days, Roosevelt passed several reforms (legislation) to provide relief, reform, and recovery to all parts of the United States

  8. Goal = • Goal = turn the economy around, and give people hope • Provide relief, reform, and recovery • Relief = for the unemployed • Recovery = measures to stimulate the economy • Reform = laws to help lessen the threat of another economic disaster

  9. Major reforms included: • CCC = Civilian Conservation Corp • PWA = Public Works Administration • NRA = National Recovery Act - NIRA – National Industrial Recovery Act • AAA = Agricultural Adjustment Act v. TVA = Tennessee Valley Authority
