1921- diagnosed with Polio • Polio slowly paralyzes the person • There was no cure • FDR refused to give up and began a vigorous exercise program to keep as much muscle control as possible Polio
In the mid 1920s FDR became politically active again • 1928 ran for governor of NY • Barely won • Re-elected by a landslide • Used his popularity to get him the Presidential Nomination Governor
Elected president in 1932 defeating Hoover soundly Roosevelt’s policies fro ending the Depression became known as the New Deal President
Bank Runs- people running to the bank to close out accounts---causing bank closures • Some of the ban runs occurred because people feared that FDR would abandon the gold standard • March 1933 4,000 banks had closed, wiping out 9 million accounts • Bank Holidays- banks would temporarily close to prevent bank runs Economic Crisis
Roosevelt’s first 100 days in office From March 9 – June 16, 1933 FDR sent bill after bill to Congress to try and “fix” the problems Congress passed 15 Major acts to resolve the economic crisis Hundred Days
March 12, 1933 FDR addressed the nation by radio • 60 million people listened to the first of many fireside chats • FDR would let the American people know what he was trying to accomplish Fireside Chats
SEC- Securities and Exchange Commission • Regulate the stock market and prevent fraud • FDIC- Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation • Insured money in bank accounts • AAA- Agricultural Adjustment Act • Pay farmers not to raise certain livestock New Programs from FDR
CCC- Civilian Conservation Corps • Gave jobs to unemployed men working planting trees, preventing forest fires, etc. • Paid $30 a month, of which $25 was sent directly home to there families • WPA- Works Progress Administration • Workers built roads, public buildings, parks, bridges, airports • FERA-Federal Emergency Relief Administration • Sent money to states to fund relief projects Relief Programs
