  1. Mock interview #3-main portion of interview Interviewer: Let’s assume that you’re launching an educational business in China. How would you go about this endeavor? Xin: First some assumptions. Let’s assume that I want to start a business that provides advanced English training to Chinese middle and high school students. Interviewer: OK. What would you do? Xin: I’d need to know whether there’s sufficient demand to make my idea viable. Interviewer: How would you determine this potential demand?

  2. Mock interview #3-main portion of interview Xin: I’d first consider the facts. There are many elementary and mid-level English training programs in China. So it’s logical that graduates of these programs would want and need advanced courses. And Chinese young people increasingly want to study and work abroad. So they’ll need to be fully competitive with native English speakers. Interviewer: What about the size of your market? How would you measure it? Xin: To quantify my market, I’d take into account a number of statistics, including the number of Chinese students already attending and applying to U.S. high schools and universities and the numbers of people attending leading English training schools like Wall Street English and New Oriental.

  3. Mock interview #3-main portion of interview Interviewer: OK, that’s a reasonable analysis. You’re getting your BA in engineering. How would you use that background in management consulting? Xin: Consultants need three critical skills: knowing how to analyze a client’s current situation and develop the appropriate recommendations; being able to work effectively as part of a team; and communicating well orally and in writing. Through various engineering-related projects at Yale, I’ve developed and honed these skills. Interviewer: Can you give me an example?

  4. Mock interview #3-main portion of interview Xin: Recently, I and other members of a small team analyzed the required functionality of Yale’s new School of Management building and, in turn, made specific design recommendations. Then we drafted a report for Yale’s President and management team and presented it. Interviewer: That does sound quite similar to consulting. I have another candidate to interview shortly. We’ll be getting back to you. Xin: If I don’t hear from you by the end of November, may I call or email you?

  5. Mock interview #3-main portion of interview Interviewer: That won’t be necessary. Next, I’ll speak with the BCG recruiting team. Then if the team is interested, they’ll invite you back during the next two weeks for a second interview. Xin: I enjoyed speaking with you and look forward to continuing the BCG interview process.
