  2. Spanish Conquistadores 1521, Hernan Cortés captured Tenochtitlan, the Aztec Capitol. Moctezuma II, the Aztec ruler, died from battle injuries. 1530s, Francisco Pizarro conquered the Inca with help from Am. Indian allies

  3. (CONT) • 1513, Juan Ponce de León came to the Americas to find Gold, he named Florida and searched for the Fountain of Youth • 1539, Hernando de Soto explored FL, GA, NC, AL, and MS and failed to find gold. First European to cross the MS River.

  4. Spanish Armada Defeat • Speed, mobility, and improved cannons were the advantages held by English ships in 1588 • The English fought the Spanish Armada with ships that belonged to sea dogs, merchants, fishermen, and the navy.

  5. Spain’s Golden Age • Of the European countries that sought wealth in the Americas in the 1500s, the one that profited most was Spain. • Because of inflation in Spain and the Spanish Armada’s defeat, Spain’s Golden Age gradually came to an end.

  6. Because American Indian resistance and high death rates from disease made the encomienda system less successful in the Caribbean, the Spanish brought enslaved Africans to work in New Spain.

  7. The Printing Press helped spread the Protestant Reformation The Protestant Reformation began in Germany.

  8. The Dutch who came to America were motivated by interest in trade. • French settlers started a fur trade with the Indians. • England’s first attempts to found a colony were unsuccessful
