Mississippi Community College Admissions: Any student who meets the graduation requirements for high school graduation is automatically eligible for entrance into a 2-year or community college. *The ACT test is also required for admission. Remember, a composite score of 20 on the ACT will award you FREE tuition at Holmes CC.

  14. I want to be a Junior! In order to be classified as a Junior, you must have: * completed English I and II * completed 2 math credits * completed 8 additional units for a minimum of 12 total credits

  15. Important!!! • Please do not rely on Summer School to become a Junior! • Did you know that you must have at least a 55 in the class you fail in order to even attend Summer School? Anything lower, Summer School is not even an option!

  19. Course Description Book If you see a course and you want to learn more about it’s content, simply go to: • www.ghsmavs.com • In the “Counselor” drop down, click on “Courses”

Let’s talk about English! • Regular English II now = Regular English III next year • Accelerated English II now = Accelerated English III or AP English III (if you meet AP requirements) next year. To be eligible for AP, students must have an A in their current English class and that teacher’s signature on the choice sheet to serve as a recommendation. • (Please remember, if you get out of Accelerated there is NO going back!)

  23. What is AP and WHY take it? • AP is college-level courses taught to well-preparedhigh school students WHY TAKE IT? • Gain an edge on College preparation • Stand out in the college admissions process • Broaden your knowledge • Possible College Credit

  24. Math options & recommendations Geometry Algebra II Ad. Math Plus Algebra II Algebra III AP AB Calculus or Ad. Math Plus *PLEASE NOTE: Algebra III is designed to be a prerequisite for Calculus and Early College classes. Ad. Math Plus is designed to be a prerequisite for AP Calculus. Make sureyou take a math your senior year!!

  25. Science Requirements are: • Biology • One Physical Science (Chemistry, Physics, or Physical Science) • Two other sciences

Science recommendations: • The GHS Science Department recommends a B or better in Biology and Algebra I to be successful in Chemistry. • B average or better is recommended in Biology, Algebra II and Chemistry if you are considering Physics • In order to take AP Physics, students must complete Algebra III or higher

  27. U. S. History You may pick either Regular US History Or AP US History * * (A in your current Social Studies course and have your current Social Studies teacher sign your choice sheet.)

  29. IMPORTANT MEETING!

  30. ACT Classes: Academic Enrichment: ACT Prep I: designed to help students obtain an ACT score of at least a 20. Students should have scored no higher than a 20 on either the ACT or pre-ACT. ACT Prep II: designed to help students obtain an ACT score of at least a 29. Students should have scored in the mid 20’s on either the ACT or pre-ACT. Students who have taken the PSAT class are not eligible.

  31. ISP Each student has an ISP (Individual Success Plan) on file. The ISP was completed by you based on your interests at the time. You may view your ISP through your ActiveStudent account. It offers a list of suggested courses to take in order to prepare you for your desired career field. Therefore, may assist you when picking classes for next year.

  33. Your choice sheet is due: To your WORLD HISTORY teacher NO later than Friday, January 25 COMPLETED AND ENTERED INTO ACTIVESTUDENT! If you happen to lock yourself out of Active Student, please see Mrs. Bergeron in the Counselor’s office. Alternate courses marked and parent signature (and teacher signature if needed)

  34. ActiveStudent: All course requests must be entered into Active Student by: Friday, January 25 If you have issues logging in, please see Mrs. Bergeron in the Counselor’s Office

  35. REMINDER: When entering you choices into the computer, please: • DO NOT add alternate courses • Leave all courses as “required”

  36. NOSCHEDULE CHANGES Therefore, please choose wisely!

  37. Food for thought! The BEST way to increase your ACT score……….. take challenging courses! Don’t take the easy way out and take easy courses! And don’t forget: a 20 on the ACT equals FREE tuition at Holmes CC!

  38. What you can do to prepare for college: • Build your resume get involved in school and the community • Work on your ACT however, ACT says not to take the test until you are a junior • Work on your GPA • Come see us with questions

Things that you need to return by January 25: • Your tri-fold choice sheet SIGNED by you and your parents with 8 choices and alternate classes • Student information sheets SIGNED by you and your parents • AP/Early College permission form (if you plan to take one of those classes) SIGNED by you and your parent
