  1. Using your phone…. • On the next page there are 6 conifer specimens you will collect from our campus. • Find out what these trees look like before you leave the room – or find out on your phone as you go. • Collect – 8” section of branch with needles. A cone from each tree type (look on ground or pull from tree).

  2. Specimen Collection One of each of the following: Western Hemlock – Tsuga heterophylla Shore Pine – Pinus contorta Douglas Fir – Pseudotsuga menzesii Incense Cedar – Calocedrus decurrens Redwood – Sequoia sempervirens Giant Sequoia – Sequoiadendron giganteum

  3. Squirrel damage Two of the trees bark look like this. Why do you think they have this problem?

  4. Description Describe the location of each tree. What other plants are around the tree? Can you see the roots on top of the ground? How much sun does the tree receive? How much shelter (protection from wind)? Approximate size and age of tree. (your best guess) When you return to the classroom, use masking tape to put the name on each of your samples.
