  1. Laboratory Safety The Do’s and Don’ts of Working in a Chemical Laboratory

  2. Laboratory Safety Rules • Wear the appropriate clothing for lab. • Only books and notebooks needed for the lab should be on the lab table. • Read the entire experiment before entering the lab. • Read all chemical labels. • Walk with care in the lab. • Food, beverages, gum, and cosmetics are NEVER allowed in the lab. • Be careful with hot plates, Bunsen burners, and other heat sources. • Hot glass and cold glass look the same, be careful!

  3. Laboratory Safety Rules • Always wear your safety goggles. Never smell a chemical, but waft it toward you.

  4. Laboratory Safety Rules • Long hair and bulky clothing are dangerous in the lab. • Know the location and operation of safety showers and eyewash stations. • Keep your work area clean and tidy. • All accidents should be reported to your teacher immediately, no matter how minor. • If you spill a chemical on your skin, wash it off, and notify your teacher.

  5. Laboratory Safety Rules • Do not let electrical cords dangle from the work stations. • If you spill a chemical on the floor or lab table, call your teacher rather than trying to clean it up yourself.

  6. Laboratory Safety Rules • If you get a chemical in your eyes, walk immediately to the eyewash station, turn it on, and lower your head so your eyes are in the running water. • Never point the open end of a test tube at anyone. • Horseplay, and fooling around in the lab are not permitted or tolerated at all. This includes using water bottles as water guns. • Never taste chemicals or touch them with your bare hands. • Always clean your lab station and wash your hands with soap and water before you leave the lab.

  7. Laboratory Safety Rules • What are these kids missing?
