  17. Reinforcing Cleavages Divisions within society that reinforce one another, making groups more homogeneous or similar.

  18. Cross-cutting Cleavages Divisions within society that make groups more heterogeneous or different.

  19. Manifest Destiny A notion by nineteenth-century Americans that the United States was destined to rule the continent, from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans.

  20. Race A grouping of human beings with common characteristics presumed to be transmitted genetically.

  21. Ethnicity A social division based on national origin, religion, language, and often race.

  22. Gender Gap The difference between the political opinions or political behavior of men and women.
