Unit 4. word stress and vowel clarity . Clear vowels . Stress means a word or sound is louder, longer, higher pitched. In a word, that means the word or sound is clear! Typically, the other vowels are shorter, and some of them turn into the ‘schwa’. Schwa v clear vowels.

  14. Q: using vowel symbols • The peak vowel is the stressed vowel of the most important word in a sentence or thought group. • That is why the vowel must be clear. • Use the symbols to help you focus on the vowel.
