  1. CELMA Guide Apples & Pears why standardisation of performance requirementsfor LED luminaires is important. Business Application Team Horticultural Lighting February 2006 Lighting Fixture Design Conference London – June 6th 2013 Graham White

  2. CELMA then and now 2013 CELMA and ELC Combine to create new organisation To lobby for and support European lighting industry

  3. Lighting Europe LightingEurope is an industry association representing 31 leading European lighting manufacturers and national lighting associations. The Lighting Industry Association is a founding member LightingEurope members employ over 100,000 people in Europe and represent an annual turnover estimated to exceed 20 billion euros.

  4. Uptake Of New Technology appropriate standards quality awareness performance verification

  5. Agenda • Introduction • Quality criteria initial & maintained • Quality criteria over time • Take away

  6. Compare Performance Claims?

  7. Compare Performance Claims? efficacy performance • technical definitions; • product design.

  8. Standardised Quality Criteria evaluate performance claimsfrom different manufacturers it is important: • to compare a standardised setof quality criteria; • that are measured in compliancewith the appropriate standard.

  9. IEC/PAS Performance Requirements recently published • IEC/PAS 62717 – LED modules for general lighting; • IEC/PAS 62722 – LED luminaires for general lighting. PAS stands for Public Available Specification

  10. Apples & Pears manufacturers & certification bodies IEC/PAS Performance Requirements lighting designers technical engineers policy makers CELMA Guide Apples & Pears

  11. Agenda • Introduction • Quality criteria initial & maintained • Quality criteria over time • Take away

  12. Quality Criteria Initial & Maintained scope • initial & maintained claimsof LED luminaires; • to establish confidence in the product data provided; • acceptance or rejection of quality over lifeis out of the scope! Maintained values are measured at 25% of rated life time up to a max. of 6.000 hours limitingvalues measurement methods technicaldefinitions 10.000 20.000 30.000 40.000 60.000 0

  13. Quality Criteria Mentioned In The IEC/PAS • rated input power (in W); • rated luminous flux (in lm); • LED luminaire efficacy (in lm/W); • luminous intensity distribution; • Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT in K); • rated Colour Rendering Index (CRI); • rated chromaticity co-ordinate values (initial and maintained); • maintained luminous flux Performance claims are always measured at a specific ambient temperature (tq). Maintained values are measured at 25% of rated life time up to a max. of 6.000 hours.

  14. Photometric Code six digit photometric code displays important ‘quality of light’ parameters • initial CRI value of 84 – code 8; • initial CCT value of 3000K – code 30; • initial spread of chromaticity co-ordinates within a 3-step MacAdam ellipse – code 3; • maintained spread of chromaticity co-ordinates within a 5-step MacAdam ellipse – code 5; • maintained luminous flux of 91% – code 9. Maintained values are measured at 25% of rated life time up to a max. of 6.000 hours.

  15. Agenda • Introduction • Quality criteria initial & maintained • Quality criteria over time • Take away

  16. Quality Criteria Over Time > 6000hrs – lifetime claims • lumen maintenance; • luminaire life. 10.000 20.000 30.000 40.000 60.000 0

  17. Lumen Maintenance Claims • This is about lumen maintenance of LED’s used in a LED luminaire 0 10.000 20.000 30.000 40.000 60.000 LM-80: 6-10K hrs real measurement. TM-21:extrapolation 6x measurement .

  18. Lumen Maintenance Claims lumen maintenance (LxBy) • gradual light degradation of LED’s over time. 2 constraints • catastrophic failuresof individual LED’s are not taken into account; • no validated wayto translate lumen maintenance of LED’s into lumen maintenance of LED luminaire. • lumen maintenance LED’s ≠ lumen maintenance LED luminaire; • metric seems less appropriateto assess LED luminaires performance!

  19. Luminaire Life Claims

  20. Luminaire Life Claims Following IEC recommended lifetime metrics lumen maintenance(LxFy) • gradual light degradation of all relevant components; • abrupt failures of individual LED’s & critical components. abrupt failures (L0Cy) • of the complete luminaire. Specified at: ambient temperature, # burning hours & # switches per day.

  21. IEC Recommended Lifetime Metrics gradual light degradation Example L70F50 life time (hrs) where light output ≥70% for 50% of the population. abrupt light degradation Example L0C10 life time (hrs) where light output is 0% for 10% of the population.

  22. Luminaire Life Claims LED luminaire life (system) lumen maintenance(Lx Fy) abrupt failures(L0 Cy)

  23. Agenda • Introduction • Quality criteria initial & maintained • Quality criteria over time • Take away

  24. Take Away Remember not to mix up ‘Apples & Pears’ Fair comparison of initial performanceof different LED luminaires: • ask for product specifications measured against an appropriate standard (e.g. IEC/PAS performance requirements). When considering performance over timeof a LED luminaire: • forget about LM-80/TM-21 lumen maintenance data of LED’s used in a luminaire; • look for luminaire lifebased on ‘lumen maintenance’ & ‘abrupt failures’ of the complete LED luminaire or system.

  25. Take Away CELMA Guide Apples & Pears: Why standardisation of performance criteria for LED luminaires is important. • IEC/PAS 62717 – LED modules for general lighting; • IEC/PAS 62722 – LED luminaires for general lighting.
