  1. Ecosystem 1

  2. Monitoring Questions • Assume a “list” has been developed • 1. What CECs are in the aquatic system? • 2. Is there reasonable potential for adverse impacts to biota? • 3. What CECs are priorities for future research/mgmt action? • Are treatment/control methods effective?

  3. Program Design • Ambient focus, not compliance • Build upon existing programs • RMP, Bight, SWAMP • Regional and targeted design • Water, sed, biota (CEC dependent) • Annual (min) • Seasonal inputs • Matched sampling for matrices • Confounding factors a concern for biota • Broad scan and targeted list

  4. Methods • Appropriate for CEC list • Performance based rather that EPA regulatory • Establish QA/QC (eg. SWAMP) • Use partnership for standardization/development activities • Interlaboratory studies, establish comparability among regions

  5. Nontraditional methods • Yes, several could be used soon • MOA assays (in vitro) • Estrongenic, androgenic, anti- • Whole animal plasma steroids • Passive samplers • Biomarkers in resident biota • Not ready yet • Develop in partnership with Fed and local agencies • Formal validation not essential
