Lowering the risk of genetic birth defects

A large number of birth defects in babies are due to genetics. Planning a baby should start with adopting a healthy lifestyle for at least a year before starting IVF treatment. This will not only lower the risk of genetic birth defects but it will also improve fertility including the quality of eggs and sperm.

  1. Lowering the Risk of Genetic Birth Defects

  2. Lowering the Risk of Genetic Birth Defects A large number of birth defects in babies are due to genetics. These abnormalities in the genes are passed down from the previous generations. Some conditions may surface with every generation while other anomalies may skip a few generations in between and then show up in a baby a few generations down the line. It is difficult to tell when these birth defects may surface and if it is not inevitable, a couple would prefer that it skip their child. Generally nothing much can be done to alter the gene pool of the baby (unless parents would like to use donor egg or sperm). Most couples resign themselves to the fact that it is in the genes and hence it will just continue through the generations to come. Tests to identify genetic birth defects In cases where there is a history of birth defects in the genetics of the family the doctor may suggest certain preconception screening tests before IVF treatment. These tests help to identify if the likelihood of the baby suffering from any of these birth defects. Most couple prefer to do these tests rather than live with the lifelong regret of not having conducted the tests and having a baby with genetic disorders. Some couples avoid taking these tests because of the cost factor. Many of these tests for genetic problems are quite expensive and an additional financial burden for couples. These couples are willing to take the risk of birth defects due to genetic issues with the hope that their child may be a lucky one and not have the genetic disorder.

  3. Lowering the Risk of Genetic Birth Defects Genetic disorder If we look at the ancestry, these genetic problems developed over the years. A genetic disorder is caused due to an abnormality in the genome. Over the years different life style habits, food habits or bad habits led to the development of these disorders that have since been passed down through the generations. Scientific research data states that there is a strong correlation between cognitive deficits and male fertility problems. Men with poor quality sperm or sperm abnormalities have a greater risk of fathering babies with mental and learning disorders. This thought can be quite unnerving and prenatal genetic tests are recommended just to ensure that the baby is okay. Not all genetic abnormalities can be detected. Right food can help lower genetic birth defects Food plays a major role in our gene expression. Our genes are known to respond to what we eat. A diet that is rich in nutrition content has a valuable and positive impact on the genes. It is possible to improve our genes and reduce the risk of birth defects that we are passing down through each generation with a healthier diet and life style. The right diet would include 40% carbohydrates. A good content of zinc, calcium, folic acid and Vitamin C are essential. If you are not sure that you are getting these in your diet then taking supplements is advisable. These are really helpful in lowering risks of genetic disorders.

  4. Lowering the Risk of Genetic Birth Defects The intention is to build up the immunity of the body and keep a close tab on insulin levels. A well balanced healthy diet reduces the need for the body to secrete insulin. Eliminating poor lifestyle habits like alcohol, smoking, drugs, caffeine, junk food and replacing it with good habits like exercise, diet rich in nutritional content and adequate sleep can have a very positive impact on the genes. Planning a baby should start with adopting a healthy lifestyle for at least a year before starting IVF treatment. This will not only lower the risk of genetic birth defects but it will also improve fertility including the quality of eggs and sperm. The good news is the genes respond fast to a healthy change in diet. Couple will feel their overall health improve and also feel more energetic and vibrant. Moreover this will put you in better shape to be parents and the physical exertion of keeping up with a little one. www.medicoverfertility.com
