  1. Atomic Structure Project6th Grade In order to reinforce information taught about the basic structure of the atom, students are to construct a paper model of an atom and mount it on colored computer paper. The atomic numbers for the element they are assigned will be drawn from a “hat” in class.

  2. Students will do research to find: • Number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in atoms of their element (most common form) • Arrangement of electrons in the energy levels • Chemical Symbol • Atomic number • Metal / Nonmetal / Metalloid? • Find at least 2 uses for the element • Person who discovered it (if known) • Year it was discovered (if known)

  3. The drawing / model should be a Bohr type model showing number and locations of electrons, and numbers of protons and neutrons in the nucleus. • A legend should be included to indicate the identity of the particles. • The information may be typed or neatly written in dark ink. It should be visible from several feet, since I would like to display them in the hall.

  4. All projects are to be mounted in the portrait position (hamburger) • Name should be small in the lower right corner. (first name, last initial) • Work should be done neatly and put together without smears, excessive visible tape, and glue blobs. • Writing should be neat and legible. • Spelling should be correct.

  5. Rubric • Atomic model correctly drawn 70 pt. ______ and labeled • Required information shown: 2 pt. each symbol, atomic number, element (16 pt. total ______ name, classification, (Metal, Nonm.) and at least 2 uses for the element, scientist who discovered it and when (if known) • Legend labeling the identity of 9 pts. ______ the atomic particles • Incorrect spelling 2 pt. each ______ • Name in bottom right corner 3 pts. ______ TOTAL
