  2. WHO WAS JOHN SMITH AND WHAT WAS HIS GOAL? John Smith was born in January of 1580 in Lincolnshire England. Smith decided on a life of combat and served with the English army abroad. Smith went through a lot, involvingbeing captured and enslaved while embarking on a campaign against the Turks in Hungary, but escaped this and returned to England in the 1600’s. Smith enjoyed exploring, and was an author, but exploring was his main hobby. John Smiths adventures were not just for his own personal quest, but a fundamental goal of the Jamestown colony. They had absolutely no idea how big North America was, but followed the instructions given to them. These were: Find a route to the Pacific, uncover gold, silver, and mineral wealth, trade with Indians, map the area, and claim land for the crown.

  3. WHAT ROUTE DID THEY TAKE & WHAT DID THEY FIND? Smith and fourteen other men went on this voyage in search of the route to the Pacific. They headed north along today’s Eastern shore then moved to the Western shore to probe the rivers. They encountered native people every day & Indians gave the crew food. They then explored Bloodsworth Island then sailed north into the Nanticoke river. They had a lot of problems on the way with rough waters, and the sail ripping, but kept going until they found the Chesapeake Bay. They chose this route because of how the tide floated the boat, and they kept following the rivers and the Western shore which led them to the bay where they saw an abundance of plant and animal life; and had more discoveries to come.

  4. HOW DID HE FINANCE THE TRIP & WHY WAS THE EXPLORATION IMPORTANT? The Virginia Company of London paid for Smith’s two small Chesapeake Expeditions. They were hoping to make a profit from colonizing Virginia. On his first voyage, Smith took 14 men with him, they were in search of a route to the Pacific. The men made many trades with Native Americans along the way. On the second journey he only took with him 12 men, making the ship less crowded and more comfortable. On this particular journey they made it to the head of The Chesapeake Bay, finally discovering there was no connection to the Pacific Ocean. In both journeys he only took one ship;hisshallop, a small boat made for maneuvering shallow waters.The bay is the largest estuary in the United States with an extremely complex eco system, which shows its importance.
