  1. Lab Safety 7th Grade Science

  2. Safety Rules • Always get the teacher’s permission before you begin an activity • Before you begin, read the activity all the way through. • If you have questions, ask the teacher! • Use Safety equipment provided for you. • Goggles, apron, etc.

  3. When heating materials, always slant the opening of the container away from you and others. • Never: • Eat or drink in the lab • Use glassware as food or drink containers • Inhale chemicals • Taste any substance or draw any material into a tube using your mouth.

  4. If you spill a chemical on yourself or a counter, wash it off right away with water. • Report any spill to your teacher and lab partner(s). • Know the location and proper use of fire extinguisher, eye wash, safety shower, fire blanket, first aid kit, and fire alarm.

  5. Know safety symbols. (These are in the back of your science book in Appendix A) • Keep all materials away from open flames. • Roll up sleeves • Keep long hair or loose clothes tied back • Remove scarves and loose jewlery

  6. Fire • In case of a fire, smother the fire with a fire blanket • Use the fire extinguisher on equipment, NOT on people • Never run

  7. Report to your teacher every accident or injury, no matter how small.

  8. Clean Up • Turn off water • Turn off electric devices before unplugging them • Return all materials to their proper places • Dispose of chemicals and other materials as directed by the teacher

  9. Clean-up continued… • Place broken glass and solid substances in proper containers. Never discard materials in the sink. • Clean work area thoroughly. Disinfect if necessary. • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water.
