  1. Lab Safety Let’s prevent accidents . . .

  2. Accidents are . . • unplanned • unnecessary • frequently preventable • anything from a pain in the to much worse.

  3. Do not . . . • fight • skirmish • stand-off • bully • practical joke in the Chemistry lab.

  4. Dangling Electrical Cords • Do not allow any electrical cord to dangle off the lab bench. • Passersby can “catch” the cord and pull equipment off the bench.

  5. safety goggles • Use to protect your eyes and your eyebrows

  6. lab coat or apron • Use to protect your clothes or your skin.

  7. Do not sit down at the lab bench while carrying out an experiment. If something spills, you may not be able to get out of the way. It is okay to sit when doing calculations, etc.

  8. Fire Blanket • Use to extinguish burning clothing or to keep warm during a fire • Stop, drop and roll.

  9. Bunsen Burner To ignite: • close the air vents. • turn on the gas. • spark the gas above the burner. • adjust the air vents to get a blue flame. [Hottest part of the flame is at the top of the inner blue cone.] 5. To extinguish the burner, turn off the gas. If you have a problem with the burner, shut the gas off.

  10. Fire Extinguisher • Use to extinguish fires. • Pull the “thingy”; squeeze the handle; aim at base of the flames.

  11. Safety Shower • Use when chemicals spill on you, or when you need a quick wash before a date or social function*. *cold water only

  12. Eye-wash Station • Use when chemicals get in your eyes. • Located at the safety shower.

  13. Spills and Breakage . . . Inform the teacher immediately, before small problems become big problems.

  14. Emergency Shut-off Systems • To shut off electricity to the lab benches, push the red “panic- button” under the PA system speaker at the front of the lab. • To shut off the gas, turn the lever under the sink of the front bench. The teacher will show you where this is.

  15. Summary • behave appropriately in the lab • wear safety glasses • no dangling electrical cords • report breakage, accidents, spills, injuries to the teacher right away • problem with bunsen burner: shut off gas. • wear lab coat/apron • know location & proper use of eye-wash station, safety shower and fire extinguisher. • know location & proper use of emergency electricity & gas shut offs.
