  1. “unreeling” “One hundredth of an inch” “sky” “feeding out” “leaving” “metres” What connections can you make between any of the following words? “hatch” “pinch” “fly” “base” “kite” “endless” “centimetres” “fall” “anchor”

  2. ‘Mother Any Distance’ Key Question: Can I use all of the skills I have learned in this unit to write an extended response to a poem? Level 5 – Use quotations and explain what words suggest Level 6 – As above and offer more than one idea Level 7 – As above and explain both ideas in detail. Begin to make connections between quotations / spot patterns in word choices.

  3. How many different points in time can you think of where a child moves away from its mother?

  4. “You at the zero-end, me with the spool of tape” • “Unreeling / years between us. Anchor. Kite” • “your fingertips still pinch / the last one-hundredth of an inch” • “I reach / towards a hatch that opens on an endless sky / to fall or fly”

  5. Plenary • Look at your notes from this lesson. Have you met your mid-term target? Highlight evidence that you have. • E.g. • Target: comment on why certain words are used • Highlight where you have done this

  6. RAF3: Recognise IMPLIED meanings (what might be SUGGESTED but not SAID “I space-walk through the empty bedrooms” RAF3: Provide MORE THAN ONE IDEA RAF5: Comment on why certain words have been used

  7. ‘Mother Any Distance’ (2) LO: To use our notes from last lesson and our homework targets to write our first assessment PEE paragraph

  8. Level 6 • The speaker feels slightly lost without his mother. • He says “I space walk” • which suggests that he is unsteady on his feet without her. Space walking means not having gravity to hold you down, which could show that he is missing the support of his mother. • Because this poem is about different stages of leaving, this could also link to when he learned to walk and felt lost on his own and unsteady on his feet.

  9. Level 7 • The speaker feels slightly lost without his mother. • “Empty bedrooms’ also show that he will miss her as the new house doesn’t have any memories or his mother to make it home.

  10. Mother, any distance greater than a single spanrequires a second pair of hands. You come to help me measure windows, pelmets, doors, the acres of the walls, the prairies of the floors. You at the zero-end, me with the spool of tape, recordinglength, reporting metres, centimetres back to base, then leavingup the stairs, the line still feeding out, unreelingyears between us. Anchor. Kite.I space-walk through the empty bedrooms, climbthe ladder to the loft, to breaking point, where somethinghas to give; two floors below your fingertips still pinchthe last one-hundredth of an inch...I reachtowards a hatch that opens on an endless skyto fall or fly.

  11. Write your first PEE paragraph for one of the 4 quotations. • Focus on YOUR target • providing more than one idea, • explaining why a metaphor has been used, • Using/linking evidence Mother, any distance greater than a single spanrequires a second pair of hands. Anchor. Kite.I space-walk through the empty bedrooms, climbthe ladder to the loft, to breaking point, where something has to give; two floors below your fingertips still pinchthe last one-hundredth of an inch...I reachtowards a hatch that opens on an endless skyto fall or fly.
