  3. Arkansas Department of Education Office of Coordinated School Health Mission Statement Through strategic statewide planning coordinated school health will disseminate information, resources, and opportunities to link schools and communities to improve the health and wellness of Arkansans.

  4. Arkansas Department of Education What is Joint-Use? A partnership between a school and another public or private entity who have a common goal where facilities or land are shared between the two parties to the meet community’s need.

  5. Arkansas Department of Education Why Joint-Use? • Reduce the incidence of childhood obesity • Increase physical activity • Encourage schools to become neighborhood centers. • Build community • Maximize public resources • Enhance services and learning

Arkansas Department of Education Governor Beebe’s 2009 Health Care Initiative • Tobacco Excise Tax: Act 180 of 2009 • FY 10 $500,000 • Arkansas Department of Education • $5,000 or $10,000 Grants • Competitive Process • Projects are based on individual LEAs *Collaborative effort between: Arkansas Department of Education, Arkansas Department of Health, & the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement

Arkansas Department of Education Common Projects • A community organization needs space, a local elementary school needs to enrich the after school program. • A school keep its gymnasium open after hours in the winter for students and community members to use after hours on weekdays and weekends. • A charter school needs a gymnasium, a nearby church needs more resources for the gymnasium upkeep.

Arkansas Department of Education Arkansas Joint-Use Success Stories • Springdale- Neighborhood school partnering with the city to enrich the campus to renovate the outdoor tennis, basketball, and soccer facilities. • Gurdon- Rural School partnering with the city to enrich the campus and to install a walking trail between the middle school and high school campus.
