  5. 2022 Winter Olympic Games • Beijing, along with Zhangjiakou in north western Hebei province, wants to host the Winter Games in 2022. Yang Shu'an, President of the Chinese Olympic Committee, said China would do everything possible to make sure winter sports become an important part of people's life in the country. • Countries have different reasons for wanting to host the Olympics. Most have the desire to show pride in their city and their country, and they want to be in the international spotlight for two weeks. It also provides the opportunity to bring new jobs into the community and to build up tourism.

  6. Olympic Costs • Hosting the Olympics can be very expensive. Many roads and venues are built, but they are not used very often after the Olympics are finished. The 2008 Beijing Olympics estimated cost was $40 billion. At the time, it was the most expensive Olympic Games ever. The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics estimated cost is $50 billion. • Do you think China should host the 2022 Winter Olympics? Or should the money be used to improve other things in China?
